Five High School Teams Win Awards for Their Euro Knowledge
Organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, this year's contest marked the 19th edition of the Euro Challenge, an annual competition that provides high school students throughout the United States with an exciting opportunity to learn about economics, the global economy, and policymaking in the member states of the eurozone. Participating teams step into the role of policymakers to consider innovative solutions to shared economic policy challenges.
Following regional contests which took place throughout March, 25 teams from across the country travelled to TD Bank's One Vanderbilt location in New York City to participate in the semi-final and final rounds on April 28. The expert panel of judges comprised Ben Carliner, Senior Economist at the Delegation of the European Union to the U.S., Bruce Kasman, Chief Economist and Global Head of Economic Research at JP Morgan Chase, and Marco Antonio Achon, Global Head of Corporate Banking, Santander.
The Euro Challenge promotes economic literacy, introduces students to the European Union and underscores the importance of transatlantic ties. Since its inception, more than 10,000 U.S. students across the United States have benefited from participating in the event, which also engaged over 1,000 teachers. This year’s 86 schools collectively represented 22 U.S. States. The first and second placed teams will enjoy a field trip to Washington, DC, to present their recommendations to the embassy of the country they researched.
Ambassador of the European Union to the United States, Jovita Neliupšienė announced this year’s finalist teams and emphasized that “the Euro Challenge is about discussing the economy…and monetary policy and you notice how close the transatlantic community is”. She emphasized the importance of using the Euro Challenge experience to “stay curious…you are all on top of the news…you know what is happening around you and outside your country”.
Ambassador Neliupšienė congratulated the five winning teams and all Euro Challenge participants for their impressive performance. She also recognized the teachers’ efforts and dedication in coaching their teams in extracurricular hours. She specifically commended the creative aspect of the Challenge which requires students to explore innovative policy recommendations on complex economic challenges the Eurozone faces.
This year’s winners from first to fifth are Saint Peter’s Preparatory School, New Jersey, Greenwich High School, Connecticut, International Academy OKMA, Michigan, Princeton High School, New Jersey, and Saint Joseph High School, Indiana.
